Coloured Ryelands

Coloured Ryelands:

Angie chose Coloured Ryelands as a breed as she had seen them locally at a training day and they really appealed. Georgie did some research and they ticked every box.

Firstly the Coloured Ryelands originated near Ledbury, Herefordshire where Angie & Georgie lived for many years. It was one of their favourite places to have called home, so even more special to have found their favourite sheep breed originated there too.  Coloured Ryelands are so easy, very affectionate, and have a multi purpose role.

All our stock are pedigree registered Coloured Ryelands.  We have selectively sourced our stock from around the UK to ensure strength, diversity and quality bloodlines.  By selecting breeding stock from beyond the local south west has widened the gene pool and therefore helps to strengthen the breed as a whole.  Bloodlines found in the Smeafield flock include: Barony, Mansel, Pembroke, Cagedale, Ruslin, Teme, Broomwell, Derwen, and Dolwen.

Our Coloured Ryeland Breeding Programme:

Our Coloured Ryeland ewes are only being bred pure to Coloured Ryeland rams.  The right ram will be selected to use on the right ewe, so no indiscriminate breeding.  The strong points of the ram will compliment the ewe in order to produce the best quality stock.  So the right ram is chosen individually for the right ewe.  Offspring are being produced for the show-ring, for smallholders, for wool and for meat.
